What will happen if I go to a police station and tell them I have been raped?

You will talk to a specially trained officer called a Victim Liaison Officer who will support you throughout the Police enquiry and will be able to explain the procedures and answer any queries and concerns that you may have.

Will I have a choice to see a female police officer?

If at all possible but it may be that the only trained officer available at the time will be male but he would be sensitive to your concerns.

Can I report the rape but not have an examination?

Yes, but it would handicap the Polices’ ability to investigate it. A specially trained Police Surgeon or Paediatrician would undertake the examination.

Will they check me for sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy at the police station?

No, however they will help you get referred to the Family Planning or G U Clinic.(sexual health clinic).

Do I tell the police if I think I have been drugged?

Yes, if you think that you could have been drugged ask the police to give you the appropriate tests.

Will the police believe me?

Yes, but it is important that you are completely truthful with them.

What if I don’t know the persons name or couldn’t recognise him?

It doesn’t matter as the Police will still investigate your allegations. They may be able to identify him in other ways.

I’m scared he will come and get me, can the police keep him away from me?

Yes, there are various methods of preventing him from contacting or bothering you,and your Victim Liaison Officer will help to ensure your safety

I feel so dirty - can I wash myself?

Please wait until you have seen the Police before washing as they may be able to get vital evidence of the offence from your clothes and body. If you wash yourself or the clothes you were wearing during the attack before you report it, this evidence may be lost.

If it goes to court will I have to see him again?

No, special measures can be applied for, so you can give evidence behind a screen or via a video link.

How long will it be before the court case?

This depends on many things but you will be kept updated by the court and your Victim Liaison Officer.

What if he gets off and comes to find me?

This could be very frightening but there are lots of ways the law can protect you.
