Why is there an age of consent?
The age of consent is there to protect young people from getting into a situation that they are not ready for. It is thought that until you are 16 you may not have thought through possible consequences from having sex: unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases and all the emotions that you may go through by having a sexual relationship.
